OUR News

Present at the

Celebration of Undergraduate Research!

The 18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research at UNC-Chapel Hill will be held April 27, 2017, from 1:15 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. The Recognition Ceremony will follow immediately after in the Union Auditorium. This event is free, open to the public, and registration is not required.

Undergraduate students present research in all disciplines in concurrent poster and panel sessions. Students can also use the Celebration as an opportunity to meet potential faculty advisors and find out about research opportunities at UNC-Chapel Hill. SURF Applications Due February 23, 2017!!

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) provides UNC undergraduates with a funded opportunity to engage in research, scholarship, or performance for at least 9 weeks during the summer. The deadline for submissions is February 23, 2017. To apply, click here

Present Your Research

The 12th Annual ACC Meeting of the Minds Undergraduate Research Conference will be held March 31 - April 2, 2017, at Duke University in Durham, NC. This annual symposium showcases undergraduate research from ACC universities. Research from all disciplines is presented through performances, posters, or oral presentations.

Every year, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sends undergraduate students to represent the university by presenting their research. If you are interested in applying to represent UNC, please submit your application by Monday, February 13, 2017.

The Health Humanities Journal of UNC-Chapel Hill is accepting submissions for the spring issue! The main purpose of this journal is to inspire, encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary thinking and collaborative work while exploring ideas that relate to health, illness, caregiving and medicine. This publication allows for dialogue, meaning-making and multiple representations of the body, health, wellness and experiences with the medical system. Submissions are accepted until February 15. UNC JOURney (Journal of Undergraduate Research) is an annual journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding faculty-mentored research conducted by current undergraduate students. We publish research in the disciplines of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Our goal is to celebrate and support the original research conducted early in students’ academic careers that reflects appropriate scope and complexity for excellent undergraduate work.

We are accepting submissions on our website until February 15, 2017. All submissions must include original research formatted according to our style guidelines and the author agreement. Questions? Please email uncjourney@gmail.com.

Get Research Experience

Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) is a ten-week paid summer research internship for students interested in pursuing a PhD. The program will be held from May 21 - July 27, 2017 at UNC. MURAP seeks to prepare talented and motivated underrepresented students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, or those with a proven commitment to diversity and to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and the academy in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The deadline for submission is February 10, 2017. To apply, click here. For more information, contact murap@unc.edu.

The Vimy Award is given annually to one interdisciplinary team of students working collaboratively to pursue research or service projects outside the United States. Made possible by the Global Education Fund, up to $15,000 is provided to fund a summer team project abroad. This award is intended to support UNC undergraduate and master’s-level students in completing self-directed or self-designed group projects internationally during the summer. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Scholars Connect Program is accepting applications for a paid internship to provide environmental health sciences research training for STEM-focused undergraduates. Scholars are paired with a NIEHS research mentor who will guide them through the process of designing, conducting, and reporting an experiment in a hosting lab. The deadline for submission is February 15, 2017. For more information, contact nscp@niehs.nih.gov.

The NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) is now accepting applications for summer 2016. In addition to full-time biomedical research opportunities, the NIH SIP provides career development opportunities for all summer interns, including workshops, courses, journal clubs and access to the OITE Career Services Center. The SIP application deadline is March 1, 2017, but students who apply early have an advantage.

The Biostatistics Epidemiology Summer Training Diversity Program (BEST) was established to expand and diversify the behavioral and biomedical sciences’ workforce by introducing undergraduates from underrepresented populations to biostatistics and cardiovascular and pulmonary disease research. Students representing racial and ethnic minority groups, disadvantaged backgrounds, and students with disabilities join the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health’s for eight weeks of research, training, academic and career planning, and social activities around New York City. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2017. For more information, contact best_bioepi@cumc.columbia.edu.

There is a call for papers for the Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (PURM) Fall 2017 special issue on Co-mentoring, Mentoring Networks, and Mentoring Models.
