This study was designed to determine if local newspapers are more sympathetic in their coverage of collegiate athletic scandals than national papers. Articles covering the Baylor basketball scandal and the Colorado football scandal were coded to determine how positively or negatively they portrayed the team. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a local paper covering the Baylor scandal, did not appear significantly more sympathetic toward the program than the New York Times or USA Today. However, the Daily Camera, a local paper covering the Colorado scandal, did appear to be far more sympathetic than the same two national papers.
