I will be presenting on the need for the modification of existing social assistance programs to address the needs of especially vulnerable groups in South Africa. In my research I focused on two forms of social assistance, the Old Age Pension and the Child Support Grant and two especially vulnerable groups, the near old (between the ages of 40-60) and persons living in HIV affected households. This presentation comes from research I have been doing over the past year and is also informed by my experience working in South Africa in the Fall of 2010.
