Cartographic Research Assistant
The Ancient World Mapping Center (AWMC) is seeking interested undergraduate students for several open Cartographic Research Assistant positions in the 2024-25 academic year. For over two decades, the Center has worked to support scholarship and teaching on the geography of the ancient Mediterranean world. An interdisciplinary research initiative within the UNC Department of History, AWMC has partnered with collaborators around the world to develop innovative digital research tools for spatial history and the history of cartography.
Research Assistants will work closely with the AWMC Director to produce maps and interactive mapping applications for scholars and students of ancient history, while developing their skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography, and historical research. This is a hybrid position, with work completed both remotely and in the Center’s office in Davis Library.
The ideal applicant:
• Has previous experience conducting university-level research (ideally in a humanities or social science field).
• Has completed (or plans to complete) coursework in history, geography, classical studies, and/or related fields.
Previous experience with GIS is appreciated but not required, as is proficiency with JavaScript, HTML, and/or CSS.
Interested students are encouraged to submit a CV and cover letter—candidates will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to applications submitted by August 22, 2024. Applicants with Federal Work Study funding should apply to position #4813 using the JobX portal. Applicants without Federal Work Study funding should email their CV and cover letter to Dr. Gabriel Moss (gwmoss@email.unc.edu).
