Every Boy Needs a Man: An Analysis of the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Black Male Educators (2016)

Undergraduate: Kimberly Clarida

Faculty Advisor: Patrick Akos
Department: Public Policy

Research suggests that Black male educators are needed as role models for Black male students, yet there is little cohesive work on the recruitment and retention of Black male teachers. This project examines the role of Black male educators through analysis of case studies and related literature. Results suggest a large role of desegregation on the job market, as well as racial barriers that push Black male educators into low-performing schools. Black male educators who decide to stay within the profession face problems with gender relations, uneasiness with the ¿¿¿hero mentality¿¿¿ and discomfort with being assigned the role of a disciplinary figure. Discussion and implications for future research and practice are presented.
