Introductory Cherokee Grammar (2005)

Undergraduate: Ben Frey

Faculty Advisor: Misha Becker
Department: Germanic Languages

This work is an attempt at creating a fully integrative and intuitive textbook for the Cherokee language. It contains a thematically organized approach to learning basic grammar and sentence structure while maintaining a fun and generally accessible learning environment. It integrates and simplifies pre-existing linguistic literature and personally attested data, making them available to people with no prior linguistic knowledge. The book organizes its lessons largely by verb-stem, which is a quintessential part of Cherokee grammar. It reinforces its lessons through pictures and exercises, and attempts to make the lessons relevant to basic everyday conversation. The purpose of the book is to provide a firm introductory foothold to conversational knowledge of the Cherokee language, and an insight into Cherokee life and culture.
