Detection and Analysis of Photofission Asymmetries (2011)

Undergraduate: John Hardin

Department: Physics & Astronomy

Methods for detecting asymmetries of fission fragment resulting from polarized gamma rays incident on Uranium are discussed. Simulations were performed using the monte-carlo Nuclear Physics toolkit geant4, with data analysis being performed mainly in ROOT. The central focus of this project is determining how to mask detectors optimally such that the asymmetric signal overcomes the noise while maintaining a sufficient count on which to perform statistics. Results of the simulations will be presented in the poster.
