This study examines dissent and other items on the home front news agenda in Chapel Hill and Orange County, North Carolina, during the Civil War. Examination of primary sources such as local newspapers, magazines, and letters, as well as some secondary sources reveals that secession, slavery, and prolonged warfare were not issues on which all North Carolinians agreed. This study analyzes how newspapers and other media portrayed and covered dissent and other news items from 1861 to 1865.
