Racial residential segregation has been a method of social stratification in the United States for centuries. The concentration of resources in neighborhoods of the majority was a common practice, especially in Southern states, while minority populations struggled to exist on an uneven playing field. The purpose of this paper is to gain an understanding of racial residential segregation in Durham County, North Carolina. Through calculation of multiple indices and the creation of maps that display the distribution of race within the county, the ultimate goal of this research is to generate foundational knowledge about Durham County that can better equip future researchers and myself to analyze other social aspects of the geographic area, such as poverty levels, health status, and literacy rates.
