Asylum Policies in Southeast Asia: A Comparative Perspective (2015)

Undergraduate: Madelyn Usher

Faculty Advisor: Frank Baumgartner
Department: Political Science

This project seeks to compare the experiences of Burmese refugees living in Thailand and Malaysia before being resettled to the US. I contrast the respective policy approaches of both countries against international standards for the treatment of refugees, and utilize extensive interviews with the local Burmese refugee population to illustrate how these policies are implemented in practice. The paper will conclude with an argument for a shift towards more integrative policies in this context.
