Water for Life (2011)

Undergraduate: Thomas Vickers

Faculty Advisor: Hannah Gill
Department: English

During the summer of 2010 I traveled to rural, central Mexico to intern with a community organization and to conduct research about water quality funded by OUR. The internship was supervised by the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC and my faculty adviser was the director of ISA. Most of the work for the internship related to education and I taught the middle grade math and English. The research measured the water quality using a field lab test and also included extensive interviews with community members. The product of the research was a report strongly influenced by the community members' own desires for the future of the town. The bulk of the report consists of a series of recommendations for how to improve the water quality and how to increase access to clean water for all town residents.
