Undergraduate: Jordan Teague

Department: Radiologic Science

Radiology is an integral part of patient care; however, many countries differ with respect to the practice of radiology. No current comprehensive overview of radiology in Latin America exists. This review covers the structure of radiology in Latin America with respect to general healthcare, socioeconomics, equipment, training, accreditation, and organizations. There are many regions in Latin America with little or no access to radiology. Where such access exists, the equipment is most likely old or not functioning, with limited access to service and a high cost, and most technologists move to urban areas. There are no standardized accreditation practices in Latin America; the formation of professional organizations would help promote the profession and standards. International cooperative organizations enhance radiology by providing resources and opportunities for cooperation between countries. The main need in Latin America is to extend coverage to the radiologically underserved. The current status of radiology in Latin America must be discovered, and with this knowledge opportunities for the betterment of the practice of radiology can be discovered.
