In the "Making Digital Learning more Adaptive and Effective" study, we examine whether adding an adaptive element to the Science of Learning to Learn can provide an optimized training experience to all learners by assessing students' prior knowledge of learning strategies and adjusting the amount of coverage – and time it takes to provide it – so that those with less developed knowledge of learning strategies can invest the full time and obtain the full benefits of the complete training, and those who can demonstrate their knowledge of learning skills can complete briefer training that offers a reminder about learning strategies, and allows them to more quickly return to their study of course topics. Utilizing the improved Science of Learning to Learn training program, with pre-test questions and adaptive material, we hope to test whether students with low prior knowledge are retaining information as effectively as a student with more prior knowledge.
