Cartographic Research Assistant

Post Date
07/24/2023
Description

The Ancient World Mapping Center (AWMC) is seeking interested undergraduate students for several open Cartographic Research Assistant positions in the 2023-24 academic year. For over two decades, the Center has worked to support scholarship and teaching on the geography of the ancient Mediterranean world. An interdisciplinary research initiative within the UNC Department of History, AWMC has partnered with collaborators around the world to develop innovative digital research tools for spatial history and the history of cartography.

Research Assistants will work closely with the AWMC Director to produce maps and interactive mapping applications for scholars and students of ancient history, while developing their skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography, and historical research. This is a hybrid position, with work completed both remotely and in the Center’s office in Davis Library.

The ideal applicant:
-Has previous experience conducting university-level research (ideally in a humanities or social science field).
-Has completed (or plans to complete) coursework in history, geography, classical studies, and/or related fields.
Previous experience with GIS is appreciated but not required, as is proficiency with JavaScript, HTML, and/or CSS.

Students who have work-study funding as part of their financial aid package should apply to the Cartographic Research Assistant position (#4813) through the JobX application system. Students without work-study funding should email Dr. Gabriel Moss (gwmoss@email.unc.edu) with:
1: A resume and list of references.
2: A brief cover letter describing their relevant skills, interests, and experiences for the Cartographic Research Assistant position.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis beginning in early August.
